The number of registered radiologic technologists passed the 300,000 mark in early May, according to the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) of St. Paul, MN.
Those 300,000 RTs have earned some 437,000 certifications, the organization reported. Currently, approximately 60% of RTs are certified in one category, with more than half of those RTs certified in radiography.
The greatest amount of growth occurred between 1930 and the 1980s, when the number of RTs more than doubled each decade. Growth after 1990 continued but at a more moderate pace.
