ACR, SIR commend Senate, House for physician shortage legislation

The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society for Interventional Radiology (SIR) are commending U.S. Senate and House representatives for putting forward the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2025 (S 2439/HR 4731).

Along with 64 other organizations that offered "enthusiastic support" for the legislation, the ACR and the SIR inked a letter noting that  "this bipartisan legislation is crucial to expanding the physician workforce and ensuring that patients across the country are able to access quality care from health providers."

If passed, the bill would add 2,000 Medicare-supported graduate medical education slots over seven years, for a total of 14,000 positions, the group wrote, noting that some of these slots would be "directed to hospitals that serve high-need communities including rural hospitals, hospitals serving health professional shortage areas with a priority to those affiliated with Historically Black Medical Schools, hospitals in states with new medical schools or campuses, and hospitals training above their existing resident caps."
