The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) announced its support for the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board’s resolution EB156(17), “Strengthening Medical Imaging Capacity.”
In a statement on May 16, the SNMMI said the resolution lays out 18 steps that provide strong direction on how the WHO can expand access to imaging services in underserved low-resource and remote areas of the world. The society also applauded the inclusion of theranostics and recognition of its role in diagnosing and treating disease.
Overall, the resolution "highlights the vital role of medical imaging in delivering timely, accurate diagnoses and effective treatment for many health conditions," the SNMMI said, noting that the resolution will be submitted for consideration to the World Health Assembly during the 78th annual World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, next week.
The document urges WHO member states to consider “integrating technological advances, such as telehealth, teleradiology, clinical decision support, artificial intelligence and specific software applications, into radiology information systems for patient records, in compliance with applicable international standards and protocols for medical imaging, including ethical aspects, security and confidentiality of data.”
