Week in Review: CT and cancer risk | AI-guided POCUS for TB | Best way to use AI in LDCT

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Our most popular story this week featured a new study that projected cancers associated with radiation from CT scans could eventually account for 5% of all new cases each year. The risk model used by the researchers also estimated that CT scans performed in 2023 were expected to result in approximately 103,000 new cancer cases over the lifetime of these patients.

The controversial research drew reactions from the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), both of which pointed out that these findings were based on theoretical risk and not on actual patient outcomes.

Developments in AI were the subjects of our second- and third-most popular articles of the week. AI-guided point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) was shown to be effective for diagnosing tuberculosis (TB), while another study assessed how AI could best be useful to radiologists in low-dose CT lung cancer screening.

What’s more, researchers found that large-language models could be useful for tracking interval changes on longitudinal radiology reports. And deep learning can enhance MRI’s ability to identify endometriosis.

Another highly viewed story this week reported on how PET/CT detected vasculitis in a patient after COVID-19 vaccination.
